Complete SOC for security, communications, storage and embedded designs

Based on Intel® architecture, the Intel® EP80579 Integrated Processor product line is the first in a series of breakthrough system on-a-chip (SOC) processors, delivering excellent performance-per-watt for small form factor designs.

This fully compatible product line (Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor and Intel® EP80579 Integrated Processor with Intel® QuickAssist Technology) provides an outstanding combination of performance, power efficiency, footprint savings and cost-effectiveness compared to discrete, multi-chip solutions.

These integrated processors are ideal for small-to-medium business (SMB) and enterprise security and communications appliances (including VPN/firewall and unified threat management), transaction terminals, interactive clients, print and imaging applications, wireless and WiMax access applications, SMB and home network attached storage, converged IP PBX solutions, converged access platforms, IP media servers, VoIP gateways and industrial automation

These SOCs include an Intel architecture complex based on the Intel® Pentium® M processor, integrated memory controller hub, integrated I/O controller hub, and flexible integrated I/O support with three Ethernet MACs, two Controller Area Network interfaces and a local expansion bus interface.

The Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor with Intel QuickAssist Technology also includes High Speed Serial¹ ports for TDM or analog voice connectivity, security accelerators for bulk encryption, hashing and public/private key generation, and data path acceleration. The integrated accelerators support Intel QuickAssist Technology through software packages provided by Intel.
Intel provides the following software packages for embedded, security and IP telephony designs:

• Intel® EP80579 Software Drivers for Embedded Applications contains all software drivers needed to utilize the hardware   
   features on the integrated processor.
• Intel EP80579 Software for Security Applications on Intel QuickAssist Technology builds upon the software drivers for
   embedded and enables acceleration of cryptographic and packet processing for a wide variety of applications.
• Intel EP80579 Software for IP Telephony Applications on Intel QuickAssist Technology builds upon the software for security
   applications by adding features important for converged IP PBX solutions, converged access platforms, IP media servers and
   VoIP gateways.


Intel Tolapai in Low-cost IP Telephony Devices

Intel System-on-a-chip (SOC) solution is well-suited for converged IP PBX solutions, converged access platforms, IP media servers and multi-service business gateways. Traditionally many IP telephony solutions required a digital signal processor (DSP) to run Voice over IP (VoIP) and applications and a network processor to manage packet –based data flows. Today small and medium businesses (SMBs) are looking for low cost systems that converge analog and digital networks and provide a variety of services, such as routing/switching, voicemail, multi-way conferencing and security, in addition to traditional IP-PBX functionality. To support all these functions, converged solutions must combine high-performance voice processing, packet processing and security acceleration capabilities.

Intel SOC have QuickAssist Technology that can dramatically lower system cost. It runs so-called soft DSP algorithms for voice compression and echo cancellation on analog calls coming in on direct Foreign eXchange Subscriber/Foreign eXchange Office (FXS/FXO) interfaces. Utilizing the Intel Accelerated DSP Solution (Intel ADS) and Intel Performance Primitive libraries. DSP algorithms execute directly on the Intel architecture core with enough headroom for a complete SMB multi-service business gateway solution. These SOC also include integrated security acceleration capabilities, so in total,thsy consolidate what was previously a six chip solution into a single device. These system-on-a-chip processors were architected with converged telephony and security applications in mind.

Intel Tolapai in Low-cost Wireless Gateway Devices

Intel SOC solution integrates features for multi-service wireless gateway solutions, and together with eco-partner offered small form factor boards, eg. Mini-ITX, for space-constrained systems with greater flexibility and long-life support. Ultra-compact motherboards are delivering much more value than many larger boards. System engineers are developing boards with more functionality, greater processing capability and advanced security features, making them better suited to serve a broad range of wired and wireless communications applications.

Combining high performance processor core and acceleration technologies, the Intel EP80579 integrated Processor supports much higher packet processing throughput compared to conventional 4-chip solution, and supports a sustained throughput of up to 1.6 Gbps – a significant improvement in throughput.

The security accelerators within the Intel EP80579 with QuickAssist Technology implement almost all the cryptography functions as well, including the encryption and decryption of packet payload, key-exchange scheme and authentication. This frees up general purpose CPU cycles to support additional customer features and capabilities.
Many of these small form factor security ad networking workloads require security and data path acceleration. Combining both with the most programmed architecture in the world, the Intel architecture makes Intel’s newest system-on-a-chip an obvious choice for small factor, modular designs. This latest SOC supporting Intel QuickAssist Technology increases the effective data throughput and performance and reduces the power consumption of a given application.


Designing Low Cost SMB and Enterprise Security Appliances

Today, small and medium business (SMB) customers are looking for low cost security solutions that integrate multiple applications into one appliance to minimize procurement costs and management expenditures. These multi-function devices often perform routing, firewall, VPN, virus detection and intrusion detection/prevention and provide a comprehensive unified threat management (UTM) solution. Supporting all these functions requires a combination of packet processing, security acceleration and high performance security application processing.

Offering a solution for all these requirements, the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor with Intel QuickAssist Technology integrates full-feature hardware-assisted security acceleration and general purpose processing. This SOC equipped with QuickAssist Technology contains a Security Services Unit that performs multiple functions including Bulk encryption, Hashing, Public/private key Encryption, True Random Number Generation and Authentication, utilizing on-chip hardware combines with Intel provided security acceleration drivers. This SOC solution combines security acceleration, computing performance and power efficiency, it consolidates what until now required four significant devices into one and dramatically lowers system cost, thus suitable for various Security Appliances for SMB and Enterprise level usage.
